New Articles, an Interview and New Developments

I think I forgot to post this, but I was interviewed in April on Science of Blogging by Travis Saunders. We discussed blogging (surprise!): how i got into it, benefits & downsides, advice, etc.

I wrote an article on Scientific American for World Oceans Day about how it is all interconnected and talk about BlueMind, an initiative thought up by Wallace Nichols to get people from a variety of disciplines to band together to understand the neuroscience of why we do (or do not) conserve the ocean.

At Deep Sea News, I organized Kraken Day to get the word out about Wendy Williams new book Kraken. All day long I posted an article from the DSN treasure chest that had to do with Cephalopods, culminating in a review of Williams’ book by Canadian science writer David Manly. Check it out!

I also posted the next installment of my ongoing series Deep-Sea 101: Forbes’ Folly-Evidence of Deep Sea Life Ignored. We are still knee deep in the history of deep-sea science section. The Other Deep Sea 101 additions are:

Introduction and What is the Deep Sea?

Lessons from the Census of Marine Life

Earl Paradigms and Exploration

The Grand Challenge of Ocean Acidification and Fisheries

Other articles on Deep Sea News that enjoyed writing:

Finding Our Deep Blue Home (a review of Julia Whitty’s new book)

Barnacle Evolution I: Phylogeny Served Without Plates

Communicating At, To or With People?

I haven’t discussed it much but I am leaving my PhD program after a year. I have lots of good reasons, but mainly it was balance between family, finances and the necessity of the degree to achieve my goals of being in a leadership position and writing. This is the right decision for me and I’m very happy with it. With much encouragement I am investing significantly more of time into freelance writing – with some fabulous payoff that I can’t talk about yet.

I am also applying to the right jobs for me. Some great opportunities that are directly in line with my career goals have come up and interviews are underway. It is my very distinct hope that I can spread some great news on this site in the next month or so. In addition, I am exploring topics for a book I am researching. This will be the topic of a new blogging project that will start near the beginning of July, more details when that is announced.

But most importantly, I am enjoying more quality time with my wife and kids and seeing more of the outdoors!
