As a co-author on the PNAS paper, and in the interest of community cohesion (which is important right now for plant barcoding to progress), I will refrain from sharing any personal knowledge or opinions I may have about this specific case ... well, maybe one day over one of those tasty microbrews I spy in your sidebar. p.s. love your new website!
